SSNCEF HOLDS COMMUNITY SENSITIZATION MEETING AT ONNA, CHILD RIGHTS DRAMA IN ESIT EKET

As part of its social mobilization against child abuse, SSNCEF held a community meeting at Ikot Akpatek in Onna Local Government Area on 28th May 2010. The meeting which drew attendance from community leaders and members from Ikot Anang and Ikot Akpatek communities was held at Methodist Primary School Ikot Akpatek. Among dignitaries at the event were Chief Effiok Ebong of Ikot Edinyang, Chief Udo Sunday Udo of Ikot Akpatek, Eteidung Udo Samson ( Village head of Ikot Akpatek) and Eteidung Okon Edem Mbosoh (Village Head of Ikot Anang)represented by his wife. The meeting was particularly eventful since it was the first of its kind by SSNCEF in Onna. It allowed for community members to be abreast of the organizations existence and program areas.


On 9th June, 2010, SSNCEF facilitated a child rights drama performance by the Oron Union Cultural Troupe at Community Secondary School, Akpautong in Esit Eket L.G.A. The event, which was well attended by over three hundred students, teachers, and community members, was chaired by Chief Okon Medekong and also witnessed the presence of the Headteacher of Stepping Stones Model School, Mrs. Grace Udua. Introducing the drama, the Coordinator of Oron Union Cultural Troupe, Chief (Mrs) Ann Medekong, herself an SSNCEF Trustee advised the students to speak up against the labelling of children as witches and the consequent abuses that follow such allegations. Speeches were also delivered by SSNCEF, Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN)’s Kubiat Idiyang and Way to the Nation’s Leo Rocha. The Principal of the school, Mr. Aniefiok Nkongduongo thanked SSNCEF for choosing his school and promised on behalf of the school to do all that is necessary to ensure those children’s rights and protected. Copies of PACT T-Shirts and Anti-Child Rights Film, Edikan, were distributed to senior students and teachers.
